Students and Alumni Mourn Passing of Roy Bartlett

Roy Bartlett died Saturday, August 25 in Austin. He served at Austin High for his entire professional career and was a giant of a man, both in body and spirit. There may be dozens of professional photographers out there who cut their professional teeth in Roy’s classes. And there are thousands more who benefited from his firm but caring guidance over the years. He was a senior class advisor and sponsored senior class events in the 1990s. He fabricated the metal stands for the 16 station “Austin high Trail”, completed in 1989. He was a “go to” kind of man when you needed good photo coverage of student activities. For many years at Dedication Day, the school was flooded with students armed with cameras and their efforts provide a lasting record of that signature Austin High event. He cared about kids and was thought of by his colleagues as a “student advocate” and the “wrong man to fool.” He delivered on anything he promised. Roy began his Austin High service in the 1970s and retired in 2007. Although the Hall of Honor process has not yet selected him as Honored Faculty, all who knew him are certain that he will soon be selected. Many grieve his passing. Services pending at Weed-Corley-Fish.
