1880s

1880s –
September 14, 1881, first day of school in two classrooms on the third floor of the “old West Austin School” at 1100 Rio Grande. Classes are segregated by sex – 18 boys and 33 girls, ages 12-14.

In 1884 the school ran out of space at Pease and moved to four Sunday school rooms at the First Baptist Church then located on Lavaca Street.
Scarlet fever epidemic extends summer vacation in 1886.
